The Gumby on a Neon Green Haro Master - A bit of history on this very silly but somewhat effective crowd pleasing trick. It was October 1984 and I was 18, warming up for my AFA run in the 17 and over expert class in my home town of San Diego, Cali. While doing a handstand, balancing on my pedal and taking one hand off, I turned my head and wave to a camera. I then realized I could twist my body around and extend my leg touching the seat and balance in one of the most silliest position on a bike. Now I should mention the holder of the camera was my mom and you know how moms can be. She convinced me to add it to my routine and was sure the crowd will love it! Well, let's just say I did it, because well...moms know best. I rode to Herbie Hancock and started my run with a Gumby. I still remember the look on Hugo Gonzales and Brian Blyther's faces when I looked up at them in judges stand, priceless! Something else that came out of 1984 was Freestyln' magazine special dedicated to freestyle - Recently Andy Jenkins, Mark Lewman and Spike Jonze put together a special tribute issue of mid-80's magazine of the first generation of riders which defined a new sport. I both honored and appreciate that "The Gumby" made the cut and was under the "What The Freestyle?" section. Gumby lives on....if you have a photo of a Gumby please email it to: davenourie@jeffnet.org - Thanks
